On the island's northwest coast, Nagata Inaka-hama is a beautiful beach for sunsets, and it's where sea turtles lay their eggs from May to July. It's beside the Inaka-hama bus stop, served by Nagata-bound buses from Miyanoura.

The Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (白谷雲水峡, Shiratani Unsuikyō) on Yakushima is a lush, green nature park containing a number of the island's ancient cedars such as the Nidaiosugi, Kugurisugi and Yayoisugi, the park's most accessible yakusugi which can be reached in a 15 minute walk. This forest is also known as the Princess Mononoke forest. The movie "Princess Mononoke" by Sudio Ghibli was inspired by this particular forest. Yakusugi Land (屋久杉ランド) is a nature park populated by a number of yakusugi (1000+ year old Yakushima Cedars), Jōmon Sugi. Jōmon Sugi are large crytomeria tree (yakusugi) located on Yakushima, in Japan. It is the oldest and largest among the old-growth cryptomeria trees on the island, and is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old.
Chinese priests began arriving to Yakushima (and the rest of Japan) around the 7th century. It appears they didn't stay on the island for very long! During the 9th and 10th centuries, Yakushima rose to fame as the exporter of precious shells called Yakugai. The Heian era (794 – 1185) aristocracy would collect them as ornaments.
